The "IL Caragiale" Bucharest National University of Theater and Cinematography is a co-organizer of the International Shakespeare Festival 2024, the 14th edition (May 16 - 26)
30 years since the first edition of the International Shakespeare Festival that brings to Craiova the biggest names of international theater direction, UNATC "IL Caragiale" Bucharest joins the National Theater "Marin Sorescu" Craiova with a special section - "UNATC Fringe - Shakespeare Unleashes Students".
Thus, the festival gains, in addition to the creative dimension, an educational one. In 2024, for the first time since the establishment of the International Shakespeare Festival, UNATC is organizing a section dedicated exclusively to future theater artists and filmmakers.
The concept "UNATC Fringe - Shakespeare Unleashes Students" is centered on the desire to bring back the creations and universe of William Shakespeare as close as possible to the community, through the eyes and sensibilities of the younger generation.
"What could be more beautiful than the meeting between young theater and film artists and the genius of Shakespeare? All that remains is for the spectators to come and see what the new generation has to share with the public, and this in 22 locations spread throughout the city of Craiova, during 106 events. 450 young sensitive hearts of artists will beat for the community! This means that from this year UNATC is co-organizer of the International Shakespeare Festival. Performances, film screenings, workshops in schools and high schools, street parades, exhibitions and debates. All this at the 30th edition of the festival, the edition that brings together Education and Culture, as a complete offer for the integral training of a balanced, healthy person, integrated in the community. For the first time, a national university and a national theater join forces for the enjoyment of the great public. We are waiting for you!" – prof. univ. dr. Liviu Lucaci, rector of UNATC.
Between May 16-26, in addition to the 30 shows that bear the signature of established directors - Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Robert Lepage or Declan Donnellan, famous professor-directors and students of UNATC offer the public new and modern versions of Shakespeare's creations : "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Twelfth Night", "The Comedy of Errors", "Controversy.1961.How do you like it?", the animated show "Handlet" after William Shakespeare or "Shakespeare's Tunnel of Passions", show by immersive theater.

Over 300 events – performances, concerts, exhibitions, parades, communications sessions, conferences, book launches, student theater workshops – will take a journey through space and time through Shakespeare Village, from 1600 to the future. The "journey" is made possible by Shakespeare Dimensions: a foray into virtual reality in an artificial intelligence-based multimedia cube, supported by NEPI Rockcastle and hosted by Promenada Mall.
The series of UNATC productions will start on Thursday, May 16 with the performance of the 3rd year of Acting, coordinated by prof. Dr. Valeria Sitaru and lect. university Dr. Vlad Logigan, on the UNATC Stage, "Twelfth Night" and with the guest performance "Romeo and Juliet", directed by Jum Rubin, from the East 15 Acting School Academy, at the Summer Theater, Romanescu Park.
With a well-deserved national and international reputation, considered to be one of the most important thematic festivals in Europe and among the most important Shakespeare festivals in the world, the International Shakespeare Festival awaits you in Craiova, where communities build the festival!
